If you have a big family to feed, try this budget-friendly, southern-fried smothered cabbage recipe.

Large cast iron pot with a lid on?heat on medium-high? Add the bacon and cook for about 5 minutes, or until browned but not crispy.

Add water last, then the cabbage pieces, and do so quickly.

Put the lid on the pot and let the cabbage steam for about a minute.

Boil for 15 minutes while adding salt and cayenne pepper for seasoning.

Remove the lid and raise the simmering temperature.

Cook for an additional 10 minutes or so, or until all liquid has evaporated and the cabbage is browning in the bottom of the pot and wilted but not soggy.

To keep cabbage from sticking, frequently scrape the bottom of the pot and turn the cabbage.
